Having a drink with friends can be a lot of fun. But when your evenings usually end up in you crossing your boundaries - your mornings increasingly filled with hangovers and you wonder what happened that night - you may be concerned whether alcohol is taking up too much of your free time.
It's not always the amount of alcohol that causes concerns. It may also have to do with the function you may have given alcohol unconsciously. Do you feel that you need alcohol to relax, to be looser or to be more daring? Or are you maybe someone who just drinks at the pace of the group, but doesn't really enjoy it at all? Whatever your reason, Moti4 is happy to explore with you whether your concerns are justified and how you can possibly deal with alcohol differently.

You have tasted alcohol once and you are not quite sure whether this is worth repeating. How was that first experience? Did you do it out of curiosity? Because your friends did it? Did you actually want to say 'no' or did you go in a little too enthusiastically and ate that glass in one go? Knowing why you want to try something and standing behind it 100% is important, so you make sure you don't do things that you might regret.

You are what we also call a recreational user. This means that you are aware of the risks and estimate in advance what the advantages and disadvantages of drinking alcohol are at that moment. When you drink alcohol, do so in moderation and do not drink too quickly in succession. Your alcohol consumption does not affect other important things in your life. Alcohol is something for every now and then for relaxation and your own pleasure!

Habits often creep in a bit. Are you aware of the role alcohol plays in your life? Is it part of it or could you do without it? When you are in this phase, it is important to understand that your body slowly gets used to the amount of alcohol you drink each week. As a result, you may need more alcohol (due to this increased tolerance) to get tipsy. Think about how many glasses you start to feel the effect? You can also reverse this process by reviewing your habit and cutting back for a while.

Moti4 participants often indicate that they do not want to become addicted. But at some point find out that problems due to drinking predate the addiction stage in their lives. We call this the problematic use phase. You are bothered by your use, for example in the field of school or work, within your relationships with friends and family, or you have come into contact with the law after having drunk a lot of alcohol in an evening. A second way your use can be problematic is because you think you need alcohol to solve other problems. Do you drink to forget your stress? To dare to make contact or because otherwise you can't seem to fall asleep? You have given alcohol a function in this phase.

Do you constantly think about alcohol? Are you unable to stop and the problems keep piling up? Then you may have slowly become dependent on alcohol. We also call this addiction and help to stop is needed. A good first step is to contact your doctor and put the story on the table. Your GP will then work with you to determine the best steps towards treatment. This is not easy to admit to yourself. If you don't dare to take the step immediately, you can always start with an anonymous conversation by phone, mail or chat, which can be found on the website: www.alcoholinfo.nl/contactinformatie
